Over the weekend, I was pretty busy and did not get to make some posts I had hoped to. So, forgive me for going back to the method of putting several links in one post, but here is an attempt to catch up a little.
1. Here is a piece from Chalmers Johnson that discusses the US presence around the world--at least 737 substantial military bases. He thinks this kinda makes us an empire.
2. This piece is an interesting commentary on how easily the Gospel can become an "inconvenient truth."
3. This is a quasi-humorous look at the "evils of socialism."
4. While we claim to be all for peace in the Middle East, this article reveals that we have told the Israeli's not to be in talks with Syria. Can somebody tell me why this administration thinks it gets to tell other countries to whom they can talk?
5. This piece provides more grist for our various discussions regarding health care insurance. It gives a little background, but continues to push the question of why private health insurance firms deserve the protection they seem to be getting. We need to remember that granting companies the protections of corporate status means they owe some allegiance to the "common good."
6. This is a very exciting piece about how younger Christians are turning toward more aggressive involvement with social justice ministries. I am certainly seeing this played out in my own daughter's life, and it is very exciting!
7. This one is, well, a tragic comedy. It seems we have a anti-homosexual Baptist pastor who has sought homosexual favors from what turned out to be a cop. Now, if that were not bad enough, the pastor has "gotten religion," so to speak, about the ACLU and is asking them to help in his defense. Go figure!
8. In this piece, Greenwald debunks the old "left wingers are the ones spoiling our war" rhetoric. If that claim is correct, Greenwald shows "the left is everywhere":>) The right's talking point on this reminds me of Hoolihan and Burns on MASH, talking about Hawkeye and Trapper: "These two are ruining the war for everybody."
