I've been in Fl visiting my daughter. So, for today, I am going to summarize a number of news stories in this one post--sorta like I used to do. Please pick and choose and offer your insights were you wish, and thanks in advance!
1. As this article notes, as did the one I linked yesterday, the recent SCOTUS decisions are the basis for a good deal of concern--especially the one relating to affirmative action.
2. I am delighted to see that Leahy is sticking to his guns so far. We really need some clear communication to the effect that current lawlessness by this administration will no longer be tolerated (and, Pelosi says we don't know the half of it). He was great, by the way, in the recent NRCAT/ACLU anti-torture rally (another story, here.).
3. Why do you think the Brits respond so much differently from us when it comes to matters relating to fear of terrorism. I found this remarkable, but consistent with what I've heard before.
4. Layoff fears part of the new normal? Well, only because we have so given up on progressivism and the idea that part of God's intentions for government is the formation of structures that create a reasonably level playing field.
5. Remember when Nixon said, "it's not against the law if the president does it"? Well, I guess Bush thinks that they are not porky earmarks if he does them....
6. In this one, Bush says we are seeing hopeful signs as a consequence of the surge, and I think he is right about that--specifically, we are seeing more repubs jumping ship and the American folks are souring pretty badly on the whole thing.
7. Here is the link to Geiger's entry with the Saturday cartoons.
8. This is an interesting piece on a new book that berates the religious right for it's Faustian bargain with the repubs. I am working on a short piece to similar points.
9. Finally, a wee bit of commentary on the underlying notions in Moore's "sicko."
Greetings from the Beach! I'm on Island Time but, as it is raining, I may get to all of these articles.
