A Ban I Could Get Behind!
Without getting into a more general argument about weapons and weapons systems and the morality of using them, there seem to me to be some judgments we can make about the relative morality of certain kinds of weapons. For example, land mines continue to rack up more casualties among the non-combatants than combatants. In addition, these devices, euphemistically called "cluster bombs," have a terrible tendency to end up on the hands of children. Even if we adults cannot grow up enough to work out our disagreements in non-violent ways, could we come together and ban the use of weapons like these? Can we agree some weapons are simply immoral to use and, thus, ought be banned by moral people? Surely, nukes, land mines, and these "cute little" cluster bombs fall into that category, eh? You know, I have heard lots of folks get pretty excited when they think of weapons systems vis-a-vis their own children--maybe, just maybe, we could see the innocent children who suffer from these awful devices as our responsibility?
I'm absolutely with you on that one Chuck.
